The materials that I have listed below are the basic materials that I utilize when I teach this unit. All worksheets, tests, answer keys, assignments, and assessments are included in this site. Naturally, you will do much brainstorming while reading this novel and will want to add activities of you own.

• Class set of "The Giver " by Lois Lowry
• Accompanying audiocassette
• Blackboard/Whiteboard, chalk, erasable markers
• I like to end each novel with a movie that depicts theme of the book. Unfortunately, The Giver was not made into a movie. The one that I use, and that my students have truly enjoyed, is Planet of the Apes, produced by Twentieth Century Fox. This is the original 1968 version of the movie. It was also remade in 2001 by Twentieth Century Fox. I prefer the original movie, but you may want to preview both of them to see which one would be more applicable to your student  body. The blue light does not play an integral part in this movie, but there are many similarities to the theme of the novel.
