Special Events

The first week of March
is party week at the William H. Ross School! Schoolwide students,
faculty, staff, and community members partake in a variety of reading
activities in observance of the National Education Association's Read
Across America campaign. The festivities really kick into high
gear every March 2nd when the Ross Media Center oversees the
celebration of the birthday of Theodor Geisel, or as most of us would
know him, the beloved Dr. Seuss. Our gala includes "Guest
Readers" from our community and birthday cake for all at
lunchtime. A preselected title is read in the classrooms and
discussion prompts always engage our "Guest Readers" and students alike
in a lively dialogue. Our Read Across America celebration titled,
"Schools of Yesteryear" earned the Ross School centerfold status in the
April 2002 edition of the NJEA Review,
the professional journal for the New Jersey Education
Association. So mark your calendar for March 2nd, party plans are
already well underway!
April and springtime
is always so welcomed at the Ross School. So, what better way to celebrate
spring could there be than turning off TV? Yes, it is true, the Ross
Media Center loves to participate in the National Turn off TV Week!
Students can't help having fun unplugging the tube and enjoying other types
of activities such as playing board and card games, baking, learning a new
craft, taking a bike ride, and of course, READING!!! Don't worry,
lots of withdrawal activities are always planned. Last year students
were introduced to STARLAB, which is a unique portable planetarium, and
the science of Astronomy. This year we will be celebrating William
Shakespeare's birthday and discussing some of his classic stories.
So gather your friends and get ready to take the challenge; unplug your
TV and plug into life!
