Walking Trips
Students who
attend the William H. Ross School live on an island named Absecon
Island. In their front yard they have five miles of beautiful
beach bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. One of their neighbors on
this island is Atlantic City, home to the world famous boardwalk and
several popular casinos. Their other neighbor, the most legendary
inhabitant on Absecon Island, is Lucy. Lucy is an elephant!
The only elephant you can walk into and out of but that is another
story. She lives in Margate so every year the Ross Media Center
sponsors a walking trip through the town to visit Lucy and other
important neighborhood sites.
Traditionally the first week in June, third graders
walk down to the Margate
Public Library, which is located on the beach, to get into the
spirit of summer reading. Students spend some time previewing
their summer reading picks, learning about their town's public library,
playing in the playground, and enjoying a picnic lunch. They also
spend some quality time with the local policemen who accompany them on
this excursion.
Also in June, fourth graders head down to the beach
to visit Lucy the Elephant,
the Margate Historical Society, and the Margate City Hall. A
hectic day, highlights include lunch under Lucy, a guided tour of this
National Historic Landmark, a verbal history of Margate, and a class
meeting
with the presiding Mayor, Commissioners, Clerk, and the Judge in the
town's courtroom.
Students are always happy to take these walking
excursions extending their learning beyond the confines of the school
building and the residents are always happy to see the children out and
about.
