Focus on Social-Emotional Learning

The month of October is nationally recognized as Bullying Prevention Month. The Margate Schools make a coordinated effort to address the issues surrounding this very important topic, not just during this month -but all year through. As a district, we recognize the Week of Respect (October 7-11) and Violence and Vandalism Awareness Week (October 21-25), and Red Ribbon Week (October 23-31) through special events and assemblies, including the District Community BBQ on the Tighe School field sponsored by the Margate/Longport Drug Alliance. Each school scheduled an Anti-Bullying/Respect Assembly, Tighe Students signed a pledge to remain drug-free, and the students are planning to wear orange for World Unity day on the 23rd. Additionally, the Kind Kids Club at Ross challenged the student body to 7 Random Acts of Kindness for the Week of Respect.

During classroom instruction, teachers placed a special emphasis on the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies throughout the curriculum. Children read stories, held class discussions, did journal writing, collaborated in cooperative learning teams, and participated in many more curricular activities helping to develop skills of empathy, self-respect and respect for others, goal-setting, organization, and positive communication and collaboration. The SEL competency development will not end with this month. These essential skills are integrated throughout the school-year, in every grade level and subject area, as well as part of the ongoing School Climate programs in each building.
